While
reading through this ad I got to wondering why Heinz didn't just make
and market their own salad dressing. A quick search of the web for
“Heinz salad dressing” brought up a whole bunch of results for
Heinz Salad Cream, which I had never heard of before. A visit to the
Heinz website tells us “Heinz® Salad Cream was the first brand
developed exclusively for the U.K. market. When first created in
Heinz’ Harlesden (London) kitchens in 1914 much of the preparation
was done by hand. Salad Cream jars were hand-packed in straw-lined
barrels- 12 dozen in each. The work schedule was 180 dozen jars a
day- with a halfpenny a dozen bonus if our loyal, skilled workforce
could beat the target.” Apparently the cream is finally slowly
making its way to the States. On the flip side of the ad we have a
snippet of a story about two feuding sisters.
