I don’t think I have eaten a popcorn ball since elementary
school, thirty plus years ago. I remember around Halloween during Trick or
Treat, or Beggars’ Night (or whatever they call it where you are from) people
would hand out homemade treats as often as store bought candy. You could expect
to find popcorn balls, caramel covered apples, all types of brownies and
cookies and even money in the form of small change. There was the German lady
who every year would hand out unwrapped sugar coated lemon drops. She would
speak to us very gently in her native language while dropping a handful of
lemon candies into each of our sacks from a big wooden bowl tucked under her arm.
I wonder what she was saying to us.
