Not that I’m any kind of an expert, but I’ve never heard of
cooking a meatloaf by packing it into a can and steam baking it. It’s so
unusual I’m tempted to try this recipe. It also provides you with an
alternative to bake it in the oven normally, but I would have to try the orange
juice can in water method.

Salmon Loaf
During the first few years of our marriage my wife and I
were frugal by necessity, which translates into not having much money. One of
the meals we (actually she) came up with between bologna sandwiches and tomato
soup was salmon patties. They were as dry as eating a sawdust sandwich, which
is probably not entirely accurate, but it’s the way I remember them. This
recipe for salmon loaf might be saved by the addition of canned tomatoes to
juice it up, but I have my doubts.
Monday
Veal Bird
I asked my wife for her opinion on what in the world the
name of this recipe was, because it looked like “Veal Bird” to me. She studied
it and came up with the idea that it could be the name of the person the recipe
came from, which made sense to me, although “Veal” seemed like a pretty strange
first name to both of us. I was just going to label the recipe “Tenderloins”
until I decided at the last minute to do a quick internet search of Veal Bird.
Guess what…that really is the name of this recipe.
Friday
Hamburger and Macaroni
In our family we have a little more elaborate version of
this recipe we call Mac
‘n’ Beef. Both versions are a quick and inexpensive way to feed your hungry
crew.
Wednesday
Spanish Fried Steak
When I read through this recipe for Spanish Fried Steak what
immediately struck me was how much larger our serving portions have gotten
since the mid 20th century. While a one pound round steak was once
considered enough to serve four people, today each person would have their own
steak.
Monday
Crab Noodle Casserole
Tuna and noodle casserole has been a standard in our house
for years but I have never tried crab and noodles. It might be good, but if the
package of Velveeta cheese called for in this recipe is the standard 32 ounce
brick it would be waaaay too much cheese for me.
Friday
Cookie Dough
This cookie dough recipe is pretty standard, but still
sounds like it would make up a decent tasting batch of cookies. Not until you
flip the card over do you realize that, like a superhero, it can turn into
something different.
Wednesday
Sugar Cookies
The next recipe in the box is for sugar cookies by a young
Miss Carolyn. They sound pretty good, too.
Monday
Grape Drink
This has to be about the simplest recipe for making grape
drink I have come across. My only question would be what is the alcohol content
after sitting for three months? Maybe the card reads three weeks instead, which
would make more sense if wanting to make grape drink rather than wine.
Friday
Orange Drop Cookies
I don’t recall ever eating these but they sound delicious. I
looked at some orange drop cookie recipes on the internet and none of them
called for black walnuts, which I think would add a nice crunch and texture to
the orange taste. The ingredients on the card written below the baking
instructions are for the frosting.
Wednesday
Oatmeal Cookies
One recipe is for oatmeal cookies with raisins and the other
is for chocolate oatmeal cookies with coconut and nuts. My only problem with
them would be which cookies to eat first!
Monday
Fudge Cookies
If it involves fudge you can usually count me in. This
recipe is kind of like a homemade version of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and
comes at you with cocoa, coconut, oatmeal, vanilla and nuts or peanut butter. I
would have to go with nuts AND peanut butter, or just use the chunky variety
with nuts already mixed in.
